Tooling and Automation

The supporting systems behind productive machining.

A machine tool depends on what happens around the cut. Workholding locates and secures the part; cutting tools carry out the operation; tool storage and part handling keep the process moving. The Morgan Corporation represents suppliers in each of these areas, making it easier to evaluate tooling and automation as part of the manufacturing system rather than as separate purchases.

This hub brings together companies focused on fixtures, chucks, abrasive and cutting tools, tool magazines, and integrated automation. Their individual pages provide a closer look at the capabilities relevant to a particular machine or production line.

The technology

01

Workholding and cutting tools

Drewco designs and produces workholding devices, including collets, chucks, arbors, centers, mandrels, machining and gear fixtures, face drivers, and gages. Its ability to make individual fixtures or multiple assemblies with interchangeable components makes it a relevant partner when a workholding arrangement must fit the application rather than the other way around.

For the cutting side, Tesch offers diamond cutting tools and CBN tools for turning, drilling, and milling in addition to grinding wheels. Lach Diamond manufactures diamond, PCD, and CBN tools for turning, drilling, milling, and grinding. Matching tool material and geometry to the workpiece and process helps make the chosen machine capability useful in actual production.

02

Tool flow and automated handling

Burkhardt+Weber is associated with tool magazine technology and was an early pioneer in digital control and rack magazines. A tool magazine affects how a machine stores and accesses the tools required for a job, especially where process flexibility and multiple operations are important.

Liebherr Gear Technology lists gantry automation, pallet handling systems, robot automation, and random bin picking alongside its gear technology. In an integrated production setting, these systems can connect equipment and help manage movement between stages. Automation should be assessed against the real part flow: how material arrives, where it is located, which operations follow, and what happens when the process changes. The right level of automation depends on the parts, volumes, and production objectives, not simply the availability of a robot.
